Rule of Law & Security

Defending Democratic Norms and Institutional Integrity

Cristosal works to protect the rule of law in contexts where democratic institutions are under strain. Erosion of judicial independence, concentration of executive power, and prolonged emergency measures reshape how laws are applied and how rights are protected.

This work focuses on ensuring that constitutional guarantees, due process, and institutional checks continue to function in practice.

How We Work

Monitor Institutional Changes

Cristosal monitors legal reforms, structural shifts within public institutions, and governance decisions that affect separation of powers and oversight. This work tracks how institutional shifts affect access to justice and constitutional rights in practice.

Assess the Use of Security Powers

Security policies in the region have increasingly been used to justify emergency measures that erode due process. Cristosal examines detention practices, emergency measures, and enforcement strategies to assess whether the exercise of state power remains consistent with constitutional standards and international human rights obligations.

Engage Through Legal Channels

Findings inform legal strategies, institutional engagement, and public accountability efforts. When institutional actions undermine due process or oversight, Cristosal acts through legal analysis, documentation, and strategic advocacy.

Publications

Cristosal publishes research and analysis documenting institutional developments, legal reforms, and security practices across the region. These publications document how governance decisions affect democratic institutions, due process, and the protection of rights.
