We are still demanding justice for the Honduran Keyla Martinez

Today marks two and a half years since the murder of Honduran Keyla Martinez inside a police cell in Intibucá.

Keyla Martinez, a nursing student, woke up like any other day and planned to meet with her friends. That night she was arrested for «»breaking curfew»». On Sunday morning, February 7, 2021, Keyla was found dead. Official sources claimed, without any investigation, that her death was a suicide. However, the autopsy revealed that Keyla was the victim of «mechanical asphyxiation».

Two and a half years later, the sentencing court found police officer Jarol Rolando guilty of the crime of reckless homicide and not of aggravated femicide the prosecution requested. Cristosal provided technical support with orientation and reinforced legal assistance with international standards and jurisprudence regarding the feminicide of Keyla.

«This ruling is outrageous. It is ridiculous for the sentencing judges to have convicted Jarol for reckless homicide. It is a mockery for the Honduran people, but most of all for us, the family,»

Norma Rodriguez, Keyla’s mother.

This case is a clear example of the abuse of power by state security forces, violation of rights, and evidence of the vulnerability of Honduran women’s lives.
