Recent events have many of us wondering whether we are in a period of global democratic regression as democracies around the world embrace populist and/or autocratic leaders. Following the rise in authoritarian governments and the states of exception, this seminar will examine this trend and analyze the causes and effects of this regression. How can a human rights framework strengthen democracies and how can democracy pave the way for respect for human rights? Where do they fall short? What can we learn from different societies and cultures that are facing these challenges?
