Theological Education with El Salvador

E-mail Print PDF

One of the most important concerns of the Salvador Anglican Church is the preparation of a new generation of leadership, both clergy and laity.

The Diocese has developed educational and formational programs, guided by the Revds. James Hagen and Alex Tobar, for all members of the church. Leadership, community, and faith development are all integral to the formation for continuing and new leadership in the church. Topics such as human sexuality, human rights, evangelism, stewardship, worship and liturgy, service (diaconia), Anglicanism and ecumenism are offered.

The Church also supports programs to train and prepare lay persons for lay pastoral ministries in rural areas. Regional Team ministries are being formed and equipped in areas such as Upper Usulután and Bajo Lempa.

Understanding the Baptismal Covenant and Christian discipleship are also woven into the curriculum of the Theological Education program.

The development of a local Cursillo Program is in formation to help in congregational and faith development.

The Diocese also participates in the Provincial Theological program (Iglesia Anglicana de la Región Central de América, IARCA) that takes place in Guatemala City. This program (Centro Anglicano para Educación Teológico Superior, CAETS) prepares persons for ordination in the various dioceses of the Province.

Two seminarians are students at the Episcopal Church of the Dominican Republic Seminary in Santo Domingo. The Church at times sends students to the Episcopal Seminary in Mexico City or Monterey.

People from Central America and North America often serve as mentors and teachers in the various programs.

The Diocesan Theological Education program also plans annual clergy retreats with the Bishop.

Financial support is always needed for the formation and continuing education of clergy and laity of the diocese.
